Hours Calculator

Enter a shift with clock-in and clock-out times, deduct lunch and breaks, and get net hours with a step-by-step breakdown. Overnight shifts and multiple breaks are handled automatically. Everything runs in your browser — no account, nothing stored on a server.

Shift details

Clock out earlier than clock in is treated as an overnight shift (crosses midnight).

Breaks (unpaid)

Enter a valid time (HH:MM) to see your hours.

How the hours calculator works

1. Gross time

Clock-out minus clock-in gives gross hours. A shift from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 gross hours; a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is also 8 gross hours because it crosses midnight.

2. Break deductions

Each unpaid break segment is subtracted from gross time. You can add as many break segments as you need — a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute rests are all deducted separately and shown in the breakdown.

3. Overtime split

With a daily overtime threshold enabled, net hours are split into regular and overtime at the threshold you choose, so you can see both totals side by side.

4. Estimated pay

Optionally enter an hourly rate and an overtime multiplier (1.5× is common) to estimate gross pay for the shift. This is an estimate only — it is not a payroll calculation and does not include taxes or deductions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate work hours from clock-in and clock-out times?

Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time to get gross hours, then subtract unpaid break time. This calculator shows every step: gross time, each break deduction, and the net worked hours, including shifts that cross midnight.

How does the calculator handle overnight shifts?

If the clock-out time is earlier than or equal to the clock-in time, the shift is treated as crossing midnight — for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM counts as 8 hours, and breaks after midnight are placed on the correct side of the day automatically.

Are lunch breaks deducted automatically?

Only if you enter them. Add one or more unpaid break segments and the calculator deducts their combined length from gross time. If two breaks overlap, they are merged so the same minutes are never deducted twice.

How is overtime calculated?

Turn on the daily overtime option and set a threshold (commonly 8 hours). Minutes beyond the threshold count as overtime. For weekly overtime (for example, after 40 hours), use the weekly or biweekly time card calculator.

Can I use this as a payroll hours calculator?

You can total hours and estimate gross pay from an hourly rate, including an overtime multiplier. The results are estimates to help you check timesheets — they are not a payroll service, and final pay should always come from your employer or payroll provider.

Estimates only. This tool helps you add up hours from timesheet entries. It is not legal, tax, or payroll advice, and results may differ from your employer's system. Pay rules such as overtime eligibility and break pay vary by employer and location — check your employer's policy or payslip for final numbers.
